1696 or later         MORDEN, Robert and PASKE, Joseph

Robert Morden´s Angliae & Walliae is his first full size version of John Adam´s wall map complete with a full graticule and side panels giving the location of principal towns. The existence of the map as early as 1696 is indicated by an advert in the London Gazette in May 1696. This announced “A New large Map of England and Wales, six foot long, and four and a half deep”. The map was to be dedicated to the (then) King His Majesty (William III). However, the only copies known have a dedication to Princess Anne but with a reference to her as Queen apparently added later, strongly suggesting the existence of two earlier states. This new dedication reads: The Most Serene & Most Potent Princess Anne.  The extra text which seems to be added later reads: Of England, Scotland, France, and Ireland Queen Defendor of the Faith &c. Shirley surmises the map was on sale before and after 1702, when Queen Anne ascended to the throne.

The map was drawn by Tho: Stevenson and engraved by J Nutting: their signatures are embedded in the royal banner.
